Culinary Academy

Day in the life of a student

Across all of our Professional and Gap Year courses, students are expected to be in the kitchens, ready to start cooking at 9.30 (or where a demonstration or theory class is scheduled in the morning, 10.00.)

Morning classes run from 9.30 until approximately 12.30 and a normal morning will involve preparing a 3 course meal. Students eat their own food each day. Tasting and comparing each other's food and group discussion during lunchtimes forms an important part of the learning process. Each class begins with a teacher-led briefing during which a time-management plan is created. This process helps students understand the process of multi-tasking in the kitchen and over time, students develop organisational skills which have applications in all walks of life.

After a short break during which students are able to leave the school and explore Woking's busy shops and cafés to get some fresh air, afternoon classes run from 2.00. Each day ends at approximately 4.30.
Afternoon classes follow a slightly different theme to the morning classes, with students often marinading meat for the following day, baking breads or pastries which they may take home... and some students will follow up an afternoon class with a shift in The Restaurant at Tante Marie.
